A mantra is a sound, a syllable or a verse repeated with attention. Chanted aloud, whispered, or repeated silently with the breath, it gives the mind one thing to rest on, and the vibration of the sound is felt in the body. Meaning matters, but the practice begins with the sound itself: steady, unhurried, clear.
